Most of the animals play games,jup or climb,but only men play sports.Men have run ,climbed,swum and lifted heavy things throughout history.Children have wrestled and raced in their games since the prehistoric ages.It is not exactly known when the sports started in terms of physical competition.

It is said that the primitive sports have begun in the BC 5000s among ancient Turks.The most common sports in the Turkish tribes settled in Middle Asia are archery,riding,weight-lifting,sword games and wrestling.The first physical education lessons were started in 1868 with the establishment of Galatasaray High School in Ottaman Empire.The first football team was set up in 1901 in İstanbul.Galatasaray sports club which was founded in 1905 was followed by Fenerbahçe,Vefa,Beykoz and Beşiktaş clubs.Selim Sıtkı Tarcan contributed significantly to improve modern sports.The first sport academi was opened in 1974 in Ankara.

Football is the most loved and has the most spectators nearly in every country in the world.Football that means "playing a ball by feet" dates back to the old ages.Football is played by two teams each of which are consisted of 11 players.The aim of this sport is to let the ball in the rival goal by using feet without using hands and arms.

The first football match was played in 1890 in İzmir.The first league matches were started in 1904 in İstanbul.The first Turkish team was established in 1901 in Kadıköy.Galatasaray sports club which was founded in 1905 was followed by Fenerbahçe,Vefa, and BJK clubs.The professional Turkish league was named National league in 1959.

Volleyball which is today very common in all countries and can be played by people from all ages is a team game.Modern volleyball is played between two teams each of which are consisted of six players. Three of the players are defenders and the others are attackers.Each team has a right to change six players in each set.

Volleyball was introduced in Turkey after the World War .An American doctor,Deaver encouraged people to play volleyball in a sports saloon of an association.Selim Sıtkı Tarcan enabled volleyball to take place in Boys’Teachers High School;thus volleyball went into many schools.

Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world.Basketball was started to be played in the late 19th century in the USA.Beginning with 1936 it has started to take place in the Olimpic Games.Basketball is played by two teams each of which is consisted of five players.
